Virtual Meeting between the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education of Sri Lanka and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore

An online meeting was held on 12 December 2025, from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m., to discuss the proposed collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education of Sri Lanka and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, with particular emphasis on graduate research opportunities. The meeting was conducted virtually and was attended by approximately 30 participants, including academic staff and students from both sides.

The University of Peradeniya was represented by Prof. H.D.W.T. Damayanthi Dassanayake, Acting Director, International Relations Office, and Ms. Thushanika Pakkiyarasa, Project Manager, International Relations Office. Participants from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, included Prof. Owen Noel Newton Fernando, Professor and Coordinator for the proposed collaboration; Prof. Chang Eng Siong; Associate Prof. Lee Busung Francis; and Prof. Jagath C. Rajapakshe, all from the College of Computing and Data Science.

During the meeting, NTU representatives introduced the university and the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS), outlining faculty research groups, key research areas, and available fully funded PhD and Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) programmes. Information was provided on scholarships, duration of study, the PhD process, and selection criteria.

The admission guidelines were clearly explained, emphasizing the need to identify a suitable research area and supervisor prior to submitting a formal application. Relevant faculty and coordinator contact details were shared to guide interested candidates. Students were encouraged to engage with the appropriate contacts and actively seek further information.

In addition, NTU representatives highlighted further opportunities available to students, including the NTU Global Connect internship programme, Research Assistant (RA) positions offered through funded projects, and opportunities for remote internships with CCDS research groups.

The meeting concluded with a shared understanding to continue discussions and explore avenues to strengthen collaboration, particularly in graduate research training, internships, and academic exchange.
