ACES Global Academy Visit

University of Illinois ACES Global Academy Visits Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya

Faculty of Agriculture| 26-27 May 2025

The 2025 ACES Global Academy from the University of Illinois made a meaningful and impactful visit to Sri Lanka, with the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, proudly serving as the key host institution. A distinguished delegation of nine professors from the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) visited the Faculty on the 26th and 27th of May 2025.

The delegation participated in a series of academic and experiential activities designed to foster international collaboration in agricultural research, education, and outreach. Their visit to Peradeniya is part of the Academy’s commitment to building strategic global partnerships and expanding scholarly impact through immersion experiences.

During their stay, the group engaged in joint discussions with faculty members, explored ongoing research initiatives, and visited local agricultural sites to better understand Sri Lanka’s unique agro-ecological systems.

This visit marks a significant step in strengthening institutional ties between the University of Illinois and the University of Peradeniya, paving the way for future collaborations in teaching, research, and extension.


CAPSLE 2026 Event

CAPSLE2026 – University of Peradeniya Hosts Sri Lanka’s First CAPSLE, Advancing Academic Leadership

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Peradeniya proudly hosted the inaugural Colloquium in Academic Preparation for Sri Lankan Educators (CAPSLE), held from January 10th to 14th, 2026. Sponsored by the United States-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission with Sivananthan Laboratories, USA, and hosted by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, this historic initiative brought together eminent local and international academic leaders.

The event began with an inauguration addressed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Terrence Madhujith, along with Dr. Bob Easter (University of Illinois) and Prof. Sivalingam Sivananthan (University of Illinois at Chicago), highlighting global collaboration in higher education.

CAPSLE 2026 was organized by Prof. Bopaya Bidanda (University of Pittsburgh), as a Fulbright Specialist in Sri Lanka for 2026. Coordination by Dean Prof. Lilantha Samaranayake, Dr. Panduka Neluwala, and the International Relations Office (InRO) ensured seamless execution, including sessions, accommodation, and transport for participants.

The colloquium gathered over 20 resource persons from local and international academia and industries, attended by 38 selected participants from 9 Sri Lankan universities. Interactive panels, lectures, workshops, and pitch competitions equipped junior faculty members with skills in teaching, research, publications, collaboration, and fundraising.

3rd International conference on “oral cancer, oral potentially malignant disorders, smokeless tobacco and areca nut”

Third international conference on “oral cancer, oral potentially malignant disorders, smokeless tobacco and areca nut” organized by the centre for Research in Oral Cancer (CROC) was successfully completed on 14th July 2019 at K bambaradeniya Auditorium, Faculty of Dental Sciences. The theme of the event was “towards a society free of oral cancer". This event was jointly organized by the Centre for Research in Oral Cancer of the Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, Ministry of Health, SLT project committee of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) and Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention. First pre conference workshop was held on the 12th on the topic of Smokeless Tobacco and Areca nut control in Sri Lanka. This workshop was conducted with the participation of all stake holders and a strategic plan for the next five years was discussed and finalized. Second workshop on Imaging and diagnostic aids in the management of Oral cancer and OPMD was held at the CPC hall on the same day.


International Conference on Environment and Medical Statistics 2020 (ICEMS 2020)

Faculty of Science| 9-10 January 2020

The International Conference on Environmental and Medical Statistics (ICEMS) 2020 was held on the 9th and 10th of January 2020 with the participation of around 70 people representing various national and international universities, research institutions and industries. This Conference was jointly hosted by the Department of Statistics & Computer Science, Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya and Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS) in collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), USA.

Establishing Collaborations with Choonhae College of Health Sciences, Ulsan City, South Korea and Implementation of Staff & Student Exchange Programme

Dr. Rasika Illeperuma, Senior Lecturer, Department of Medical Laboratory Science visited Prof. Hee Jin Kim, the President of the Choonghae College of Health Sciences, Ulsan, South Korea on invitation to discuss regarding the implementation of the student staff exchange programme between two universities. Dr. Illeperuma being the founder and the coordinator of this MOU was invited to visit Choonhae College of Health Sciences to discuss the future endeavours as well as to deliver a lecture on the topic “Health System of Sri Lanka”. President and the staff of the Choonghae College of Health Sciences warmly welcomed Dr. Illeperuma and had lengthy discussions on how to implement the staff & student exchange programme. As an initiative, ten nursing students from Choonghae College of Health Sciences will visit Sri Lanka (in July 2019) with few staff members to participate for community based activities together with nursing students of the UOP. From Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, two Nursing Department staff members will be invited to the Choonghae College of Health Sciences, for a training programme. This project is supported by a KOICA grant received for the Nursing Department of the Choonghae College of Health Sciences, Ulsan, S. Korea.
